Together, we’ll explore how the Mental Capacity Act 2005 informs and directs us to help tenants understand their responsibilities and rights. The session will include group activities and will consider best practices, options available when assessing capacity and what is needed to ensure an appropriate, safe and fair service for all.

During this training you'll:

• Gain an overview of the critical elements of the Mental Capacity Act, 2005 and how to apply them
• Understand how capacity is assessed and identify when it is necessary to involve health/social care practitioners and other professionals
• Consider how, as housing officers/support workers, we can assist individuals in understanding their rights and responsibilities as a tenant
• Explore the options available for a variety of individuals when granting and terminating tenancies, including when financial matters are involved
• Gain an understanding of the role of the Court of Protection, Independent Mental Capacity advocates, relatives, LPAs and court-appointed deputies
• Consider best practice solutions in cases of anti-social behaviour and rent arrears and make difficult decisions
• Explore how we use a variety of communication methods
• Consider how individuals who have difficulty making decisions can be vulnerable to abuse and ‘cuckooing.’
• Recognise the importance of recording our opinions. observations and practical methods used.
