How online learning helped me to reach my career goals

06/12/2013

Peter Fisher, senior accommodation officer for Ipswich Borough Council, chose to study online with CIH to gain the qualifications he needed to move into a management role. He tell us about his experiences of online learning with CIH.

Why did you choose to study online?
Online learning gave me the flexibility to study around my full-time job when I wanted to. I had gained a lot of on the job experience but wanted a qualification to support my ambitions of becoming a manager, and I've now completed three years of online study with CIH, gaining Level 3 and Level 4 qualifications with merit.

What aspects of online learning did you find most useful?
I really appreciated the support that my tutor gave me over the duration of the course. Studying has been challenging and has given me a greater insight into all the different aspects of housing. As a new manager I would certainly recommend online learning to my colleagues - I cannot speak highly enough of CIH and the courses they offer.

Were there any areas of study that you particularly enjoyed?
The modules I especially enjoyed were around housing need and economics, how housing services are delivered and managing people. These built on my existing knowledge and really helped me to understand the drivers behind national issues that I was seeing at a local level.

How have your qualifications helped you in the workplace?
My learning has made me appreciate the bigger picture with regards to housing and how each area of housing plays a part in ensuring that the best possible service is delivered.

When I started the first course I was interested in management roles but didn't have the right knowledge or experience, and I am now managing a team of people. I am convinced that my studies have played a part in this and I hope that I can help my staff with their own professional development and support them to achieve their aims.

I have really enjoyed studying over the last three years and, although the time has come for a break, I would like to think that I will come back to studying again with CIH in the future.
