'I'm proud to work for an organisation which makes such a difference."
In our latest Meet the Member feature we spoke to member champion Laura Wood, group lead for PR and communications at North Star.
Tells us about yourself and how you ended up working in housing?
In a former life, before I entered the wonderful world of housing, I was an English teacher and now I am the very proud and passionate Lead for PR and Communications at North Star. I have been working in housing for nearly four years and it has been an absolute whirlwind. It was clear as soon as I started working in housing that I had found exactly where I wanted to be and I soon realised just how vital and powerful the work we do can be.
Working at North Star has really opened my eyes to the challenges we face as a sector and the importance of working together to help secure our future. This is why I become involved with the CIH. I saw the great work they were doing across the sector to make a difference, to help people learn and grow, to help secure better futures and improve communities, to bridge generational gaps, and so much more, and I knew that this was something I wanted to be a part of.
What do you love most about your job?
I love that every day is completely different and I love working with people. My role means that not only do I get to work with a variety of people from across my own organisation, I also get to work with and meet so many different people across the sector and beyond. And most of all, I love working in a sector that really helps make a genuine difference to people’s lives.
So why have you decided to become a CIH member champion?
I’m proud to work in an organisation that really makes a difference, and to work in a sector so committed to promoting positive change. I strongly believe that by working together we can really improve people’s life chances, and create an environment that can flourish. I want to be able to work with more people, connect with more people and raise the profile of the work the CIH does, particularly with the younger generation. I’m very passionate about getting more young people into housing and for them to really see it as a positive career choice, so I hope to be able to contribute to this within my role.
Why do you think it’s important to be a member of a professional body?
Sharing practice, ideas, innovation and intelligence is key to both individual and organisational success. All things that the CIH offers in abundance. There’s so much available, skills, knowledge, advice and crucially you have access to a really strong support network.
