Meet the member: Aboubacar Sylla, Cert CIH
We caught up with CIH certified practitioner Aboubacar Sylla, service charge officer at Yorkshire Coast Homes to find out the importance of CIH membership for him.
How hard do you think it has been previously for young professionals to develop in their housing careers?
In recent years the social housing landscape has been completely redefined and the changes have brought a sense of uncertainty for many in the sector. This is especially true for young individuals just beginning their housing careers. Understandably, the focus has largely been on business sustainability, but this has meant that the opportunities which enable young people to grow, develop and learn from their seniors have taken a backseat.
Where has CIH membership been of most value to you?
As a student of the GEM Programme and CIH Level 4 Certificate for the Housing Profession, I have been able to meet fellow housing professionals and share good practice ideas, as well as learn from their career experiences. The access to policy updates has been an excellent way for me to stay up-to-date and understand how they will affect the sector.
How has being a CIH board member had an impact on your housing career?
More recently, as a CIH regional board member of Yorkshire & Humberside, I have had the pleasure of working together with very experienced and knowledgeable members. This has been a great way for me to learn about national and regional policy issues, while also improving my own skills by learning from their experiences. More importantly, I have the opportunity to meet and share experiences with other like-minded housing professionals and play a part in supporting CIH activities.
