More affordable homes 'central' to tackling homelessness
CIH deputy chief executive Gavin Smart welcomes the Communities and Local Government Committee's backing for the Homelessness Reduction Bill but says a strategy to tackle homelessness must include new homes people can afford.
CIH deputy chief executive Gavin Smart said: “We are delighted to see that the Communities and Local Government Committee has endorsed what could become a crucial piece of legislation to tackle homelessness.
“This adds more weight to our calls for the government to introduce a cross-departmental strategy to reverse what has been a steady increase in homelessness in recent years.
“The only way to make a long-term difference to homelessness will be to target resource and support at the root causes of homelessness.
“Central to this will be recognising that our housing crisis and our homelessness crisis are inextricably linked and that it is crucial that a new legislative framework for homelessness is matched by building more homes that people can afford.”
