CIH welcomes communities minister's pledge to extend welfare mitigations

CIH has welcomed the pledge from the new Department for Communities minister Deirdre Hargey to ensure that welfare mitigations extend beyond March 2020.

CIH director for Northern Ireland Justin Cartwright said:

"It is extremely welcome that minister Hargey has pledged to extend the welfare mitigations within the first few days of taking office.

"CIH has been echoing the concerns of the sector regarding the incoming welfare cliff-edge for some time and we are encouraged by minister Hargey's urgency to deal with this issue.

"However, words alone will not dispel the fears of households set to be impacted by the bedroom tax nor the concerns of a sector trying to prepare for it. Therefore, it is vital that the financial package to ensure mitigations continue with ease is put in place as soon as possible."
