CIH Cymru says Welsh housing must make the case to new MPs on non-housing issues

09/06/2017

Housing professionals across Wales will have watched the general election with a keen interest. However, because housing is a devolved issue, big headlines from England about manifesto commitments and the English housing minister losing his seat will have made little impact.

The housing sector in Wales is again united behind the Homes for Wales banner. The asks for politicians are simple:

  • Support a welfare system which ensures that everyone can access an affordable home
  • Support the construction industry to access the materials and labour it needs to build homes

CIH Cymru will be working to raise awareness with newly elected Welsh MPs around the vital contribution that addressing these two issues could have towards delivering 20,000 affordable homes in this Assembly term.

Matt Dicks, director of CIH Cymru said:

“General elections provide a critical moment for Welsh housing to raise important UK-level issues with elected representatives of all party colours. It’s vital that we make the case to MPs that non-housing issues can have a huge impact on our ability to provide people with access to an affordable home, in particular welfare reforms and the impending cap on LHA for under 35s.”

“It’s fantastic to be working with the Homes for Wales coalition again. There is consensus from organisations across the Welsh housing sector that we need to build the economy after Brexit in order to deliver 20,000 homes in this Assembly term.”
