Hoarding disorder: an understanding

6 September 2018

Hoarding disorder is now recognised as a distinct mental illness that requires a professional response. However, housing teams often struggle to understand different forms of mental illness and how best to respond to associated behaviours.

What you'll learn

This workshop will start by increasing your understanding of mental illness, the effect on housing provision and the practical tools and response options available to the housing professional. It will then explore hoarding disorder specifically; looking at how hoarding develops and building your understanding of how hoarders think and feel about their possessions. You will consider the best ways to support those with a hoarding disorder and the relevant legislation that shapes your response as a housing provider.

Topics covered

  • Risk factors for hoarding behaviour
  • Hoarder Logic (collector or hoarder?)
  • Triggers for hoarding
  • Biological and genetic factors in compulsive hoarding
  • Case Studies - Personal experiences of hoarding
  • The health, safety and wellbeing implications of hoarding behaviour
  • Relevant Legislation in UK Hoarding – Mental Health Act 1983, The Equality Act 2010 and the Human Rights Act 1998
  • Medication, treatment and therapies
  • Supporting individuals in clearance and change – providing timescales, action planning and psychological support
