Meet a mentee: Olubukola Abiiba

Hear from Olubukola Abiiba, head of leasehold sales services at Newlon Housing Trust on why she joined the CIH mentoring programme.

What motivated you to join the CIH mentoring programme?

My mentoring journey began following a deep search for insights into other areas of housing, with so many changes in the housing sector, I wanted to explore other possibilities and further develop my leadership skills especially in the areas of risk, governance and board effectiveness.

Internet search was not enough, and the mentoring programme afforded me the opportunity to be open, set clear goals and fill in gaps. Furthermore, I wanted a mentor with strong leadership skills, effective communication and strategic thinking and I was pleased that the mentoring platform gave the choice to choose your mentor and match your profiles.

How did your mentor support your professional growth?

I wanted to develop myself in areas of governance and risk with strong interest in board or committee member roles but lack the experience and full knowledge of what is required. My mentor has supported my goals by sharing their knowledge, skills and experience and challenged me to prepare and apply for roles.

I have had the opportunity to be shortlisted for some roles after updating my CV and writing a personal statement and the feedback has been encouraging. My mentor took time to review questions, gave me interview tips, challenged my knowledge, including recommending books to expand my knowledge.

Can you share a specific example of how the mentoring relationship has benefited you?

My mentor has been exceptional, his constant support has been invaluable from the very first meeting including his commitment, honesty, openness and willingness to share his own experience which are all qualities that I have learned from. Though our meetings were structured, I always looked forward to the conversations as I prepare for the meetings as they have helped me grow both personally and professionally.

What advice would you give to someone considering joining the programme?

Being a mentee was an excellent experience gaining expert knowledge from a well-experienced mentor. My advice is to invest time in the mentoring programme, I found it a safe space to grow personally and develop my career.
