Why you should CHOOSE HOUSING

I started my career in housing as a temporary support worker more than 15 years ago, I had no intention of working in housing, I intended to work financial services.

Prior to my role in social housing, I studied a Masters of Law in International Corporate Governance and Financial Regulation and written a dissertation that involved looking at the impact of mortgage backed securities on the financial crisis of 2008/9, as a housing support worker at the time I realise the importance of social housing in the provision of housing to people of differing socio-economic backgrounds and the national economy as whole. With a passion to helping others and bettering residents’ lives I decided to stay in housing. Since then, I have worked for housing associations as housing officer, intensive housing management officer, income services assistant manager and housing revenue officer for a local authority. Working on these roles I have experienced a rich causation link of housing, health, income, and community.

Further to my passion in social housing, I have had the opportunity to be involved in governance and strategic matters relating to social housing as an equality, diversity and inclusion board member for the Chartered Institute of Housing and selected on board member trainee programme by Housing Diversity Network sponsored by Karbon Homes.

So, why choose housing?

Personally, I chose housing because it involves bettering the lives of others, yes working in other sectors can involve bettering the lives of others, but with social housing I do feel the positive impact each time I help someone.

With my passion to helping people and making a difference in people’s lives, not only am I involved in the development and provision of housing to people of differing socio-economic backgrounds, but I am also helping people to live in an affordable, safe and sustainable housing and community, where people’s health and social needs can be met by accessing health care, education/training, employment, financial help, and inclusion.

I therefore encourage anyone to choose housing as career as it accommodates a wide range of skills that include construction, property development and maintenance, finance, legal, management, healthcare, and community involvement, and can be personally fulfilling if you like making a difference in people’s lives.
