CIH NI responds to the publication of the Programme for Government 2024-27

CIH Northern Ireland welcomes the publication yesterday of the Programme for Government 2024-27.

National director for CIH Northern Ireland Justin Cartwright said:

"We are very encouraged to see housing rightfully positioned as a priority in the programme for government. This reflects years of advocacy and collaboration among the housing sector, officials and representatives. The commitment to starting 5,850 new social homes is a vital step towards addressing the pressing needs of over 48,000 households on the waiting list. We recognise the challenges ahead, including water infrastructure capacity, and are committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of these targets."

Other key highlights from the Programme for Government include:

  • Delivery of 847 shared ownership homes this year and 1,900 by March 2027
  • Seeking Treasury agreement to enable NIHE borrowing to invest in its homes
  • Launch of the £10 million Loan to Acquire Move on Accommodation (LAMA) fund
  • Collaborative efforts to prevent homelessness, particularly among young people leaving care
  • Commitment to publishing an Executive agreed fuel poverty strategy
  • Ensuring the planning system supports housing delivery and working with NI Water to facilitate growth
  • Implementing the Housing Supply Strategy for long-term solutions.

CIH NI will be providing a detailed summary for our members. We are committed to working with stakeholders to ensure these ambitious housing targets are achieved, creating thriving and inclusive communities for everyone.
