Develop your knowledge and confidence to be able to manage leasehold properties effectively. Understand the leasehold legal framework and explore the day to day practicalities and challenges in managing leasehold properties.

Description

With around 4.3 million leasehold properties in England and Wales and social landlords increasingly adding to their leasehold stock, getting leasehold management right is ever more important. This course will cover the leasehold legal framework, as well as exploring the day to day practicalities and challenges in managing leasehold properties.

What will I learn?

Across the two sessions, you will gain a full understanding of leasehold management. Following the first session you will be able to:

  • Identify the lease terms you need to be aware of to ensure you can recover the cost of services, repairs and major works
  • Differentiate between what can and cannot be charged for in a service charge
  • Apply good practice in calculating service charges
  • Apply the legislation and case law that governs what service costs can be recovered and how costs can be recouped
  • Explain how service charges may be challenged by leaseholders
  • Apply practical guidance on how to recover service charge debts

Following the second session you will:

  • Manage the Section 20 process for major works and long-term agreements, including case law and best practice
  • Use informal consultation to enhance leaseholder satisfaction and avoid challenge at First Tier Tribunal
  • Proactively use the First Tier Tribunal to ensure you can recover costs
  • Describe how leaseholders can extend their leases
  • Explain how shared ownership leases differ from other leases and how shared ownership lease terms impact on the management of these homes
  • Summarise the latest on the proposed leasehold reforms
