CIH Scotland commends new legislative proposals to protect victims of domestic abuse

In response to the Scottish Government introducing its Domestic Abuse (Protection) (Scotland) Bill, CIH Scotland has commended the legislation.

The proposals in the Bill will allow social landlords to end or transfer the tenancy of a perpetrator of domestic abuse to prevent a victim becoming homeless. Currently, where both a victim and preparator of domestic abuse are named on the tenancy agreement it is not possible to end the tenancy without making both the perpetrator and victim homeless unless both parties’ give permission.

The Bill also gives police and courts powers to remove suspected abusers from a victim’s home and ban them from re-entering.

It is fantastic to see this Bill published. Victim- survivors need housing like we all do and this legislation can play a key role preventing women & children experiencing domestic abuse becoming homeless. Social landlords have been calling for more powers to protect victims of domestic abuse and we look forward to Parliament scrutinising and passing this legislation over the coming months.
