Meet a mentor: Peter O’Callaghan

Hear from Peter O’Callaghan, acquisition and development manager at Simon Community on why he joined the CIH mentoring programme.

Why did you sign up for the CIH mentoring programme?

I’ve been very fortunate to have access to fantastic mentors throughout my career, both academically, through voluntary work, and in past roles. However, when I signed up as a mentee in the CIH mentoring programme, I wanted to connect with someone completely outside my existing networks and unfamiliar with the Northern Ireland housing sector. This gave me a fresh perspective and a safe space to discuss my goals, achievements, and challenges. My mentor provided invaluable support and shared knowledge that broadened my understanding of the housing industry beyond my immediate environment.

How did your mentor/mentee support your professional growth?

My mentor helped me reflect on how far I had already come and what I had already achieved in my career. This reflection was incredibly valuable, as it gave me renewed confidence and allowed me to better understand my strengths. While I initially signed up as a mentee, I then decided to join as a mentor at the same time. I wanted to offer the same support and encouragement to someone else, recognising how powerful it can be to have someone help you see the progress you've made and the potential ahead. Both roles helped me grow professionally, but also allowed me to give back to those just starting out in the sector.

Can you share a specific example of how the mentoring relationship has benefited you?

As a mentor, one of the most impactful experiences was helping my mentee through a challenging career transition. They were navigating a new role and struggling to adapt to the different expectations and culture. Through our sessions, I was able to help them develop strategies to manage this change effectively, and it was rewarding to see them grow in confidence and succeed in their new position.

What advice would you give to someone considering joining the programme?

For anyone considering the programme, I would say don’t hesitate. The mentoring relationship - whether as a mentee or mentor - offers so much value. As a mentee, you gain fresh perspectives, and as a mentor, you grow in your own leadership and coaching abilities. It’s a mutually beneficial experience, and the lessons you learn and the relationships you build will be invaluable for both your personal and professional development.
