Shaping the future of housing: CIH Futures launches groundbreaking survey

The housing sector is evolving rapidly, and the voices of young professionals are essential to shaping its future. That is why CIH Futures, a board of emerging housing leaders, is partnering with Altair Ltd to launch a first-of-its-kind sector survey to capture the experiences, challenges, and aspirations of young people working in social housing.

Why this matters

As the sector navigates complex challenges — from professionalisation and workforce development to diversity and inclusion — understanding the perspectives of its future leaders is more important than ever. This survey will provide critical insights into how young professionals feel about their roles today and what they envision for the future of housing.

Backed by Elly Hoult, president of CIH and former CIH Futures Chair, this initiative aims to inform sector-wide strategies and spark meaningful conversations about the future of the profession, aligning with Elly's CHOOSE HOUSING presidential campaign.

What to expect

The research will include a sector-wide survey followed by focus groups, combining data and personal stories to paint a comprehensive picture of the young housing workforce. Topics will include:

  • Job satisfaction and career development
  • Sector challenges and opportunities
  • Diversity and inclusion
  • Future outlook and aspirations.

The findings will be published in a detailed report in autumn 2025, offering valuable insights for organisations, policymakers, and sector leaders.

How you can help

This is a unique opportunity for housing organisations to support the development of the sector by encouraging young professionals in their teams to take part. By promoting the survey internally and making space for participation, employers can help ensure that the voices of their future leaders are heard.

Whether you are a manager, HR lead or team member, your support can make a difference. Participation will not only contribute to sector-wide understanding but also empower young professionals to reflect on their careers and aspirations.
