The CIH Housing Academy is the largest provider of housing qualifications in the UK, and we are here to help develop your career in the housing sector.
CIH qualifications are a fantastic way of establishing yourself as a professional in the housing sector whether you are new to the housing sector or are an experienced practitioner wanting to substantiate your experience with a qualification.
We have a team of tutors, who have a wealth of knowledge and experience, both in housing and education and will support you throughout your qualification.
I have been working in the housing field since 1985 when I joined Irwell Valley Housing Association. I moved to Rochdale Council in 1989 where I worked in a variety of roles – starting as a housing officer and ending my time there as a strategy and communications manager – including developing policy. I then became involved in training and teaching – and have been involved in online tutoring and delivery since 2007 at levels four and five. I have a BSc (Hons) in Housing Studies and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. I am also a qualified assessor and internal verifier.

I worked in local authority housing for 14 years before taking up teaching housing for Cornwall College for 20 years where I designed and then delivered its Foundation Degree in Housing. While I was lecturing in housing I also worked for the CIH for which I have tutored level three to five courses since 2004 and, when it existed, a postgraduate programme which ran in conjunction with De Montfort University. I have also been an associate tutor at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

I’m a tutor with the Housing Academy working and supporting learners at level two, three and four and have worked for CIH as a tutor for the last two years.
Although I initially studied (and taught) law, I have focused on housing for a number of years with an extensive background working with learners in the areas of homelessness, social housing as well as the private rented sector.
I’m based in Northern Ireland, but I support learners throughout the UK.
The best aspect of this role is seeing learners develop in their knowledge and confidence as they progress with their qualifications.

I am looking forward to supporting you during your course. I have many years’ experience in supporting learners, through standalone qualifications and apprenticeships, to develop their housing knowledge and skills, alongside improving other transferable skills that are important in different working and personal environments. I am committed to lifelong learning and always curious about learning new things, and I enjoy supporting others to do the same.

My journey has been from being a secondary school teacher, into the homelessness sector where I worked as a support and resettlement worker, project manager and board member, then tutoring and training in housing, and leadership and management. I have a Philosophy degree, PGCE, and Post-Grad Diploma in Management. I have more than 20 years experience working with CIH qualifications in different roles and contexts, including working with residents and service users, front-line staff, senior managers and boards. I have done this in-house for housing organisations, at colleges, independent training providers and universities.
Bryony started out in youth homelessness at Centrepoint Soho and has subsequently worked in housing advice, research, resident participation, strategy and enabling, community led housing and academic roles. She was previously a senior lecturer in Housing at UWE, Bristol. Following the closure of the housing programme at UWE Bryony has worked in strategic housing roles for various local authorities whilst also working as a tutor and author for the CIH.
Bryony is a RICS chartered surveyor as well as CIH professional and her academic interests focus on housing policy, housing development and the role of local government in housing policy.
I work as a consultant in asset management, working for local authority and housing association clients at the strategic level. I've been doing this for about 30 years.
My background is in construction, and I'm qualified as a building surveyor. I went back to further education in my mid 30s, so know how daunting it can feel to return to academia after a long break.
I'm here to help students succeed, and will do all I can to help you through your studies.
In my spare time I like cycling and cooking.
I have worked in the social housing sector since 2008, starting out as an apprentice before moving into roles across allocations, welfare benefits, and income management. Following my career in housing, I moved into delivering, assessing, authoring, and quality assuring housing and property management qualifications as well as apprenticeships, and have loved bringing my knowledge and experience to the sector to support training and delivery nationally. Having completed my own CIH qualifications as well as a degree in Psychology, I have experience of being a learner myself and navigating both online and face to face learning whilst working full time.
Working backwards, (1999 – present) currently, my company, Open Communities Ltd, works with local communities made up of tenants and leaseholders living on regeneration estates – providing independent and impartial advice to communities going through regeneration/redevelopment of their homes and communities. Our work is based around ensuring that residents have a strong voice in shaping the regeneration/redevelopment proposals and that their rights are protected throughout the process.
Establish yourself as a professional in the housing sector and ensuring you have the theoretical knowledge, essential skills, and learning to perform at the highest level in your day job. The qualifications make skills visible and bring a greater depth of understanding than experience alone can provide.
