We are in urgent need of new homes to tackle the housing crisis and support those on waiting lists. Whilst providers are operating in difficult financial climates, many recognise the need for development and demonstrate good practice in this space. This section will demonstrate the need for new homes, as well as provide examples and case studies for lesson learning.

Supply gap

We desperately need more homes to tackle the housing and homelessness crises. The current government has a target of building 1.5 million new homes over five years, with a significant focus on social rent homes. CIH has called for a boost in development, which is outlined in our housing strategy.

Funding and partnerships

Much of development of affordable housing is possible due to grant funding from the government, particularly to subsidise social rent homes. This is largely delivered through the Affordable Homes Programme and Homes England, although there are other mechanisms to boost development.
