A compendium of good practice for housing associations in preventing homelessness

Launched in Manchester at Housing 2022, the homelessness prevention compendium, created by CIH in collaboration with the National Federation of Housing and Homes for Cathy, is an essential resource for anyone working to prevent homelessness with tenants.

The document explores a variety of innovative and successful housing led approaches to prevent homelessness for tenants and other people at risk of homelessness. Topics include:

  • What is homelessness prevention?
  • Housing associations’ role in preventing homelessness
  • Why prevent homelessness?
  • Targeted prevention
  • Crisis prevention
  • Recovery prevention

The compendium highlights the multitude of good practice taking place across England, where housing associations are taking proactive and supportive action to work with and for their tenants to prevent homelessness.  It provides a non-exhaustive list of examples of the many ways in which housing associations can help prevent homelessness for their tenants and other people at risk of homelessness, with reference case studies. It is intended to be a resource that readers can dip in and out of and come back to.
