CIH International Housing Group study trip 2025

New York City, 6–9 October 2025

Join CIH colleagues on a proposed visit to New York City for a three-day visit to meet with the state and local government, discuss affordable housing development with local developers and investors in affordable housing, and visit major regeneration and development projects.

NYC faces similar challenges to the UK in delivering and managing housing including an affordability crisis for residents, increased costs of delivering new homes, NIMBYism slowing down planning, a supply shortage driving up prices, and housing insecurity leading to evictions and homelessness

Affordable housing in New York City is delivered through various city, state and federal initiatives and programs – the city's ambitious "24 in 24" plan, which aimed to advance 24 affordable housing projects on public sites in 2024 created or preserved over 13,000 units of housing across all five boroughs. The city has also passed the "City of Yes for Housing Opportunity" plan, the most pro-housing zoning proposal in New York City's history.

The aims of the trip are to:

  • Understand innovative housing policies: to learn about New York City's recent initiatives, such as the '24 in 24' plan and the 'City of Yes for Housing Opportunity' plan
  • Exploring diverse housing financing solutions: learn about the city's approach to funding affordable housing, using the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit system
  • Addressing affordability and supply issues: to gain insights into how New York City is tackling its affordability crisis and supply shortage
  • Learn for large scale private sector led development: to gain insight into complex urban development and infrastructure projects
  • Networking and collaboration: to engage with counterparts in New York City, share experiences, and build networks that could lead to collaborative projects and knowledge exchange.

This trip is open to all but may be of particular interest to those working in development, regeneration, funding and financing.

This study trip will be delivered in partnership with The Housing Forum and is open to both CIH and Housing Forum members, as well as non-members.

The trip is expected to cost between £1,200–1,400 per person (based on cost of three nights accommodation and organising costs, excluding flights), and we ask for a £150 deposit. Delegates will need to book their own flights. There are options for those who wish to book their own hotels.

For CIH Futures members, two bursaries of £250 are available to assist with costs.

At this stage, we just need you to express an interest, so that we can confirm demand for the trip. We will then confirm with you and follow up with details for paying a deposit to confirm your place.
