The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves MP, delivered her Spending Review to the House of Commons today (11 June).
Responding to the announcements, Gavin Smart, CEO, said:
“This is a significant and much-needed package of investment in social and affordable housing – one that we called for in our Spending Review submission, and we strongly welcome it.
"The £39 billion 10-year Affordable Homes Programme, combined with the commitment to a 10 year settlement for social rent with a consultation on convergence, access to £1 billion building safety and £13.2 billion retrofit funding will give the sector the confidence and means to build new homes and invest in existing ones – ensuring more people have a safe, warm, and secure place to call home.
"The additional £950 million for the Local Authority Housing Fund will help improve both the quality and supply of temporary accommodation while new affordable homes are delivered. We know more is needed to stabilise and unlock capacity in Housing Revenue Accounts, and look forward to working with government to support local authorities in their vital work to deliver for local communities.
"We also welcome the announcement of a review of the Green Book, which could help unlock investment and support more equitable housing delivery across the country.
"We note that there was no update on supported housing in today's announcement - and this vital part of the housing system remains in financial crisis following years of cuts. Without urgent investment, more services risk closure – placing further strain on the NHS and other public services – so we’ll continue to champion it.
"Overall this package sends a clear signal that the government recognises the essential role that decent, affordable housing plays in people’s lives – and the long-term certainty the sector needs to plan and deliver.
"We look forward to further details in the coming weeks and to working in partnership with government, our members, and sector partners to deliver on our mission - ensuring everyone has access to a safe and secure home."
